EARTH DAY PHOTO CONTEST Please have your RES student submit his or her best photograph of nature for a display in honor of Earth Day. Download the flyer Theme: Mother Nature… big and small! B&W or Color; 4x6 or 5x7
Please mount on paper and include related caption, thought, or reflection written or typed by the student [include student’s name and grade level]. Send photo in an envelope marked for PTA Green Team Earth Day Photos between April 16-20th.
The 42nd Earth Day falls on Sunday, April 22, and Robious Elementary has a week full of activities planned in honor!
This week (April 16-20), we are collecting photographs taken by students depicting tiny nature scenes, huge nature scenes, and everything in between. Remember to mount photos (up to 5x7) on paper and include a caption about the photo’s significance authored by the student photographer. The RES Green Team will be putting up a display of all submitted photos at the end of the week, so please stop by and take a look when you can!
On Friday April 20 morning, the RES Green Team is encouraging as many families as possible to participate in a “Hurray for Earth Day” walking bus. To show extra spirit, wear a green or nature-themed shirt. It would be great if we could have 100 or more walkers turn out! If you live close enough to walk, perhaps you can even invite friends who live farther afield to come start at your house! Please remember to keep any participating dogs away from the front door of the school.
On Saturday, we will have a Green Team booth at Whistlestop…look for us and learn more about recycling and ways to be green at home.
And then, next week (April 23-27), we are challenging all of our students to turn off their screens and get outside to play. To that end, be on the lookout for the tally slips in this Friday’s folder. Each day that your child is “screen-free” and/or plays outside for at least an hour, you can sign off and submit a slip confirming their participation. If the whole school logs 1,000 hours of no screens and outdoor time, Mr. Austin has agreed to allow a school-wide pajama day. In addition, the grade level with the highest week-long participation rate will earn extra recess. How great is that?!!
Thank you for your involvement in all of our Earth Week activities!
Robious Elementary School is going green, and we need your help! This year we are expanding our recycling program...more details coming soon! In addition to reducing and recycling, the Green Team will be planning other “green” events throughout the school year, to raise awareness and to practice new behaviors.
The Green Team needs members, so if you want to share your great green idea or help with a green event, please contact the Green Team coordinator, Katie Mattes at katie_mattes@me.com.
Robious Elementary School is officially entering its fourth year of "greening" and recycling efforts. I wanted to take a minute to thank Bryna Dunn and the veteran Green Team members for all their hard work launching and maturing Robious's recycling and green programs over the past three years. I am excited to continue the "greening" as this year's Green Team chair.
At school, we will continue our established recycling programs, which include: Broken Crayon Recycling: each classroom will continue to collect crayons for recycling by a local Girl Scout troop;
Glue Stick/Glue Bottle Recyling: each classroom will continue to empty glue sticks and empty glue bottles for recycling;
Classroom paper and plastic recycling: each classroom will continue to collect recyclable materials like paper and plastic as part of our highly successful classroom recycling program.
"Green" starts at home. Parents can encourage green practices by: Packing waste-free lunches. Use reusable containers and avoid packaging like plastic bags, foils and wraps. Click here for tips;
Participate in Robious's Walking School Bus. A walking school bus is a group of children walking to/from school with one or more adults.
The Green Team will gather in the near future to plan programs for the 2011-12 school year, including Earth Week plans. A new program under consideration is development of a school garden. I invite you to consider joining the Green Team, and I welcome your comments and participation.
